Can Ancient Jade Be Identified Scientifically? Episode 5

In the last four episodes, we’ve explored the correct approach to understanding ancient jade. We’ve broken down the identification process into four main aspects: material, stains/patina, design, and craftsmanship. These four factors form the foundation for identifying ancient jade. Each aspect must be carefully examined and aligned cohesively, avoiding any forced conclusions.

However, not all ancient jade pieces exhibit these four factors equally at the same time. When inconsistencies arise, it’s essential to update our knowledge accordingly. For example, a piece may demonstrate consistency in material, patina, and craftsmanship, but its design might not match the typical patterns of its presumed era. In such cases, we should exercise caution before determining its age. Often, these situations present opportunities to refine or expand our understanding.

Think of these four factors as distinct perspectives, each uncovering unique information about the jade. Together, they create a comprehensive framework for analysis. By cross-referencing one piece with another, similarities act as the “mortar” that binds knowledge together, while differences provide new branches for inquiry. Gradually, this process builds a deeper understanding of ancient jade and its cultural significance.

Who Can Use This Framework?

Anyone with an interest in ancient jade can apply this method. There’s no single “correct” starting point—you can begin with whichever factor feels most intuitive.

For instance, I started with material. In one of my YouTube videos, I analyzed a Hongshan jade cloud plaque with clear signs of surface deterioration. Even without prior knowledge, anyone could recognize its age based on its patina. However, determining its precise age or its origin within a specific Neolithic culture required further study.

Choose a starting point that feels natural to you, and practice applying this framework to every jade piece. Over time, as you become familiar with the method, it will feel as intuitive as driving a car. With each application, your skills and understanding will improve.

Is This Method a Scientific Approach?

The answer is yes.

This four-point framework aligns with the principles of ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle’s “four causes,” which categorize objects into four essential components:

  1. Material Cause: What it’s made of. (In jade, this includes material, stains, and patina.)

  2. Formal Cause: Its shape and appearance. (Jade’s design and form.)

  3. Efficient Cause: How it was made and by whom. (Craftsmanship and tools used.)

  4. Final Cause: Why it was made. (The meaning and function of jade.)

If modern science is built on the empirical observations of ancient philosophers, then dividing the intricate process of jade identification into four manageable factors is a scientific approach.

The Knowledge Is Ever-Evolving

The knowledge gained through this framework is dynamic. It grows as we encounter new pieces or revisit familiar ones. Each interaction offers fresh insights because our ability to observe and analyze evolves over time.

As I’ve mentioned on YouTube, ancient jade is a patient teacher. It poses mysteries, invites questions, and leads us deeper into its world. Empirical observation and critical inquiry are the keys to uncovering its secrets.

The Role of Modern Science

In today’s world, we often rely on machines, data, and laboratory tests for answers. Some institutions have even subjected ancient jade to laboratory analysis, including heating it to extract data. Unfortunately, jade is highly sensitive to heat, and such methods can irreversibly damage its structure. While these tests may yield certain data points, they are neither reliable nor truly scientific methods for identifying jade.

Genuine understanding comes from direct observation and study, guided by philosophical inquiry and empirical methods. Before embarking on the study of ancient jade, I strongly recommend gaining a foundation in philosophy—understanding how to think and what to think about.

At its core, science is a process of building on previous knowledge and unifying understanding. By applying this framework, we not only honor the history and craftsmanship of ancient jade but also contribute to the continuous evolution of its study.
